Two members of our team, Charlie and Emma, completed this kitchen spray in Huddersfield over two days last month. As can be seen from the before photos, the laminate on the cupboards had started to bubble, peel and warp. We receive so many enquiries from customers whose laminate has blown and so these peel and prime sprays have become our specialism. In some kitchens, the laminate has become damaged on just a few cupboards, usually those next to dishwashers or ovens, where the heat and moisture has caused the laminate to fail. In other kitchens, such as this one, the damage to the laminate is extensive and the laminate wrap needs to be removed from all of the cupboards and drawers.

Why are Kitchen Cupboard Doors Bubbling?

The poorer quality of laminate and adhesives used nowadays has meant that laminate becomes damaged more frequently. Sunlight can also cause the laminate to fade and become brittle. As mentioned above, moisture, such as from dishwashers, is another factor which causes the laminate to lift away.

How to Fix Bubbled Laminate Cabinets

We cannot reverse bubbles such as these but what we can do is apply techniques that we have developed and specialist tools that we have invested in to carefully remove the laminate without damaging the underlying material. Another member of our team, Laura, had visited this kitchen prior to us agreeing to take on this spray so that she could inspect the blown laminate, the adhesive that had been used and the underneath surface.

If your laminate has become cracked, swollen, warped or damaged in any way, Checkatrade advise that:

“Removing vinyl wrap yourself instead of hiring a professional does come with some potential risks. These include:

  • Potential damage to the surface of the kitchen door
  • Leftover residue that can be difficult to remove properly

It’s also worth noting that removing vinyl wrap can be very time consuming and fiddly, especially if you don’t have previous experience.

For best results, we always recommend hiring a professional.”

Our team of professionals, who have years of experience, can skilfully restore your wrapped kitchen.

As these photos show, it is possible for warped kitchen cupboards to be restored by using the right techniques and tools. By using skills developed over 18 years, Emma has become proficient in laminate wrap removal and achieving a surface which is as smooth as possible, ready to be spray painted in each customers’ chosen colour. This customer chose a colour match to Purbeck Stone by Farrow and Ball for her kitchen transformation.

Kitchen Door Repair Reviews

Here are some of the reviews that we have received from customers who have had a spray following their laminate or vinyl failing. As you will read, these customers were all pleased with the outcome, with the amount of money they had saved by choosing a spray over a kitchen replacement and with how their laminate wrap removal and kitchen spray was so hassle free!

We have almost 1,000 reviews on our Trustpilot, Facebook and Google review pages and all of those reviews are either four or five stars! We would recommend that if you plan on having your kitchen resprayed, especially if it involves damaged laminate or vinyl, that you call in the professionals.

As an alternative to having the laminate removed and the underneath surface spray painted, you can also have a fresh layer of laminate or vinyl applied to your cupboards. This is not a service that we provide however Checkatrade do list approximate costs of kitchen door wrapping as follows:

“The full cost of kitchen door wrapping depends on the materials, chosen finish, number of units and the full area size. However, you can expect a single door to cost between £180 – £250. Labour on top will cost between £150 – £200 for the day.”

For a kitchen with around 25 cupboards and drawers to have the laminate peeled and the underneath MDF sanded, primed and spray painted (as well as all side panels, cornices, pelmets and plinths being sprayed), we would charge around £1,950 plus VAT (£2,340 including VAT). To have the same amount of items wrapped, it appears that the cost would be at least £4,500, not including the labour charges. It therefore seems that kitchen wrapping is considerably more expensive than spray painting and we would argue that spraying is the more durable of the two options, as we can guarantee that our coating will not peel, crack, fade or discolour for at least 10 years whereas the new wrap applied could start to come away again, as the original wrap did.
