Precautions to Prevent Vinyl Discolouration

Our Customer Testimonials

Have your vinyl wrapped kitchen cabinets yellowed over time? Many of our customers contact us enquiring about our kitchen respray service as their vinyl has faded or they have developed yellow stains on it. There are many reasons why vinyl can discolour, including exposure to sunlight, cooking within the kitchen and chemical reactions. We will discuss precautionary steps which can be taken to prevent discolouration below. By the time customers reach out to us, the yellowing has already taken place regrettably.

As stated by Forbes, “in reality, the best way to maintain that sparkle is to never use your kitchen, but if you insist on actually cooking, you are likely to encounter yellowing cabinets, accumulations of grease, and stained and marred sinks and countertops. What fun.” As kitchens are the heart of a home and are usually used multiple times every day, it is very unlikely that your kitchen can remain in a pristine, unused condition and so some yellowing may be unavoidable unfortunately.

Respraying Discoloured Vinyl

Our kitchen spray service provides a solution as we can spray over the yellowing cabinets in our specialist coating. We use the market leading paint which is UV resistant and we will guarantee that the colour that we spray will not fade or discolour for at least 10 years. Kitchen spray painting can be used both to remedy discolouration that has already occurred as well as to avoid unsightly stains before they appear.

In some kitchens that we spray, the vinyl is still in a good condition and our customers just want to refresh their kitchen with a new colour or sheen. Our paint is perfect for this as it can be sprayed in absolutely any colour and in a 10% matte, 30% satin or 70% low gloss sheen.  In other kitchens, our customers have chosen us to respray their kitchen cabinets due to the vinyl becoming blown or damaged in some way. In such kitchens, our teams use heat guns to carefully remove the top vinyl layer before priming then spraying the underneath MDF. We have invested in specialist sanding machinery, enabling our teams to achieve as smooth a finish as possible.

With discoloured cabinets where the vinyl is still intact, the vinyl can be left in place and our teams can spray over the top in whichever colour our customers would like them to. Some customers choose to have their yellowed or faded cabinets sprayed back to their original colour (this time with the assurance that the discolouration will not happen again for many years) whereas other customers take the spray opportunity to choose a different colour to completely transform their kitchen. Whichever colour is sprayed, our teams take the time to do it right so your kitchen cabinets will look their best.

Precautions to Prevent Vinyl Discolouration

If you have had a vinyl kitchen fit and the vinyl has not yet discoloured, we recommend taking precautions as early as possible after the installation in the hope of preventing the yellowing or fading, which would adversely affect your kitchen. Not only does the discolouration look unsightly, it can also reduce the value of your home should you come to sell it in the future. Here are our recommendations for preventing discolouration:

  1. Whilst cooking, grease and food particles spread through the air, accumulating on kitchen cabinets and leading to staining after prolonged exposure. Kitchen cabinets should be maintained on an ongoing basis and visible dirt, grease and other contaminants should be cleaned up as soon as possible.
  2. Sunshine is another cause of vinyl yellowing or fading and whilst we can guarantee that items coated in our paint will not discolour for years and years due to the paint’s UV resistance, unfortunately kitchen manufacturers will not usually provide any warranty on sun damage. If your kitchen has not been sprayed with our coating, we recommend that you limit natural light coming through the kitchen windows, although doing so will mean that your kitchen will not be as bright and airy as it could be.
  3. Take time to research the kitchen manufacturer prior to buying a kitchen from them, to ensure that the company is reputable. Sometimes vinyl cabinets can yellow due to an irreversible chemical reaction and so using a trustworthy company with plenty of customer testimonials should hopefully indicate that the company is one who are less likely to use cheaper products, reducing the likelihood of such a reaction taking place.

One of our teams sprayed the below kitchen in Astley, Greater Manchester last month. Our customer’s vinyl had started to yellow in certain areas however remained its original colour in other areas, leading to patchiness. Jim and Ashley removed the vinyl from the fronts of all of the cupboards and drawers and primed those items, prior to spraying the cupboards, drawers and fixed items in a colour match to Elephant’s Breath by Farrow and Ball. The end result is a consistent cover across the kitchen and this beautiful colour will not fade, discolour, crack or peel for at least 10 years.

Our Customer Testimonials

One of our customers, Heather posted on Trustpilot that she “decided to go with the same cream colour although I was tempted to change but was happy with original colour of cupboards so decided to keep them the same…So pleased I found this company the kitchen looks like new again and saved a lot of money on having to replace all the doors.

Here is Rosie’s lovely feedback following her kitchen spray:

Having recently relocated we wanted to give the kitchen a makeover but on a limited budget a new kitchen was far too expensive. We contacted We Spray uPCV for information – and following an assessment / in depth discussion from one of the team during a home visit we booked a date to have our yellow units resprayed…We were given clear instructions as to how to prepare the kitchen units including advice re which products to avoid cleaning the units with…The result is incredible…the kitchen looks brand new – our family and friends and we – love it! I’d highly recommend We Spray uPVC – competitively priced – much cheaper than a new kitchen – much cheaper than replacing existing doors. We are delighted.
